Sweden is blessed with a huge wood fuel resource and a sophisticated wood fuels industry (one of CO2NE’s founders was a pioneer of Sweden’s wood fuels industry) which forms the large majority of our fuel.
However, CO2NE and other parts of the NEE group are very active within the emerging Biomass energy crops industry and are actively reviewing Salix, Miscanthus, Red Canary Grass, Straw and other energy crop fuels.
Gasification is more akin to a controlled high temperature process than combustion and accordingly its fuels are usually a degree more controlled. Typically we seek split logs (or energy crop briquettes) roughly 50 to 100mm cube sized chunks, with a 15 to 20% moisture content (some drying done on PowerStation site). Smaller sized wood chip and biomass fuel pellets can be used, but prove a more expensive option.
Combustion typically does not require the same degree of fuel control and can accept a higher moisture content. Commercial grade wood chip is an ideal and readily available fuel source for this type of PowerStation.
